It’s just an ol’ spec Miata with granddaddy’s carbs off his Austin Healy. How much money you want to race for?

I’ve been perusing the build threads of Miataturbo.net lately. Something about finally getting closer to having boost....

Anyways, I found an awesome build with a carbureted NA8 Miata built for the dragstip, with the goal being to get into the 9's. Worth a read! Oh... And it’s been in progress for almost a decade, which is how I feel about my build at times.

Here are some highlights. He gets a BIT of ribbing for how long the project is taking.

To be honest I usually watch drift videos for inspiration to get work done.

One thing to consider with your miata; Where will the gold heat tape go? (Very important planning step) Ive gotten to the point of using some of mine and its a little harder to decide where it goes than anticipated.

When in doubt, wrap the underside of your hood. If you have any leftover gold heat tape, you’re morally obligated to strip your interior and install said heat tape over bare metal. In the rare event that both of those steps still don’t use up all of your available gold heat tape, I recommend wrapping yourself completely in whatever is leftover. The heat tape will reflect gravity and thus stop your weight from negatively effecting the cars perfect 50/50 distribution. Hope that helps.

At some point I want to do some minor drift-focused fabricating. My e-brake is trash. I would love a hydraulic line with a second caliper setup, but preferably separate from the standard setup so I’m not totally screwed if I lose brake pressure. Improving my steering angle would be great too, but I don’t know how well that would work with my current setup...

I can say that modifying the knuckles for more angle was the single best $300 I’ve spent thus far. We’ll brush aside the fact that then I needed huge spacers and can’t run anything wider than 8.5" and the fact that wider fenders had to be made since the -1 offset was poking just a tad, or the rubbing on the lca and sway bar and fender or the fact that I should run extended brake lines that need to be custom made. These are all just mere details.

The improvements to parking performance are worth it.

Ah. Yes. Parking performance! You understand! It’s just so damn tough getting my Miata into spots without resorting to a 10-point turn.

Okay, take all of those “minor annoyances” and add in a suspension setup that’s meant to change from low to offroad multiple times a year with various tire sizes, and already has clearance issues... Maybe I can talk Studystudystudy into helping out with some fitment woes sometime lol

Simple fix is fender flares. You could also start with steering rack spacers before going full bore with different knuckles.
